Climate justice is understanding that Indigenous people need to be at the fore front of discussions, decision making and the fight to get land back and care for it. Because if it’s not a First Nations approach when it comes to protecting the environment then all it is, is another settler doing what they think is best on land that doesn’t belong to them.
Land back is the process where Indigenous people actively combat or fight corporations and government to protect sacred sites. Land back is being on country and doing ceremonies and smoking and feeling country, but it’s also about putting our bodies on the line for land and for people because the relationship that people have with land and each other is one and the same.
In the top section the artwork shows a smoking ceremony, gum trees and the generations into the future that we must consider. The top section represents our connection to country and culture. The bottom section shows mob protesting and blockading to protect and fight for our people and land. Practising our culture and fighting for justice is all interconnected with climate justice and land back.
