Story of the 'Land Back' design
We honour the Palestinian women in Shatilla refugee camp and their sisters on Gadigal country who created this design.
The ‘Land Back’ design is the product of a series of acts of solidarity between Palestinians in Shatilla and First Nations people of this continent. In 2022, Shatilla organised public meetings about Aboriginal history and resistance, learning from Boe Spearim’s Frontier War Stories podcast. It didn’t take long for Palestinians in Shatilla to understand the colonial story of this continent and deeply connect with First Nations struggle.
Love for Aboriginal people and anti-colonial resistance spread throughout the camp. On the 74th anniversary of the Nakba, residents of Shatilla painted a mural to honour the solidarity between both peoples in their fight against brutal colonisation.
On the international day of solidarity with Palestinians in November 2022, Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance and Justice for Palestine Meanjin returned the gesture by dropping huge Palestinian and Aboriginal flags in central Meanjin.
The ‘Land Back’ design was originally painted on a banner by Palestinian young people and transported to Meanjin for the Invasion Day rally this year. Artist Matt Chun created a print from this original banner art that features on our 'solidaritees'. The designs on this site are the latest expression of the love and solidarity between Palestinians and Blackfullas.
